Mönchsjoch - Gross Grünhorn - Hollandia - Ebnefluh - Fafleralp
Despite the risk of poor acclimatization when sleeping the first night at the Mönchshut, we decided to do the Gross Grünhorn from there which provides a much quicker and easier approach in the morning. This worked out great for us. As mentioned, conditions are a dream at the moment in the entire area and everything is traced.
After the Gross Grünhorn we skied down to Konkordia square and had lunch on(!) one of the lonely boulders (highly recommended lunch spot). The climb up to the Hollandia hut seems (and is) endless, especially with the temperatures we had. But the other option would have been to arrive very early already at the Konkordia hut. Overall that day was 1450m of elevation gain.
The views from Ebenefluh are great but the first 1h30 brings back the memories from the previous day (long flat glacier). And of course, it's a heli skiing landing spot, which sure enough a group got dropped off on the summit around 8:30. Next time we'll consider the Mittaghorn instead. Although the descent from Lötschenlücke is very pretty and already worth the entire trip.
Overall the Jungfrau/Aletsch area never disappoints for ski touring!
Very good conditions in the entire area. Perfect boot track on the Gross Grünhorn ridge entirely in snow (only a few steps on rocks). Glaciers are very well covered. Descent on skis all the way to Fafleralp still possible.
Gross Grünhorn: 4h to summit, 1h15 to Konkordiaplatz, 3h to Hollandia (6:00 to 15:15 with 1h breaks) Ebenefluh: 2h20 to summit, 0h20 to ski to back to hut, 1h15 to Fafleralp (7:00 to 11:30 with 30 minute breaks)
Very warm with about 5cm of fresh snow on Tuesday night. Perfect conditions on Wednesday with zero wind. Very hot in the afternoon. Windy (but clear) on Thursday morning.
Mönchsjoch hut has very small amount of dripping (non-drinkable) water in the washrooms. Their dog Fynn gets out to play after dinning. His version of fetch is definitely rather unique (he puts his toy somewhere in the room and then waits for someone to throw it).
Hollandia hut has zero running water (but you can buy half a liter of melt water for 3 CHF). Coque au vin served in the Hollandia hut was certainly the highlight food wise. And they also have a cute dog.
