Cabane des Dix → Pigne d'Arolla → Col de l'Évêque
Very rewarding 2-day trip. The detour via Col de l'Évêque for the return is absolutely worth it and makes it a nice loop away from the crowds.
Very good conditions overall.
"Ski piste" up to Pas de Chèvres thanks to the PDG. The ladder on the Pas de Chèvres is getting a bit short to reach the ground. Note that there is a sling hanging off on the right side of the ladder as a small extension. Fixed ropes for the lower part but overall a bit treacherous in the soft afternoon snow. Maybe better to go via the Col de Tsena Réfien like the PDG did the day before?
Col de la Serpentine can be done entirely on skis (ski crampons can be useful). Glacier is well covered. Hard snow on the descent towards Vignettes. Retour on the Haut glacier d'Arolla in perfect spring snow. Skiing possible on the remains of the cross country slope almost to the old cable car station. Less than 10 minute walk to reach Arolla.
Day 1:
Arolla to Dix (4h)
Day 2:
Pigne d'Arolla (3h15) Col de l'Évêque (2h) Arolla (1h)
Total including breaks: 7h30 (06:30 to 14:00)
First day mixed sun and clouds. Second day sunny all day. Cold wind at times in the morning, i.e. on the summit unfortunately.
Very friendly welcome with good and lots of food. Including a glass of wine for apéro!
